    Experimenting with Science, Food & Netflix! {#netflixkids}

    It’s about that time when parents hear the seven words they dread.  “Help me with my science fair project”.  Luckily for me, I escaped that project this year but next year, I’ll be prepared to tackle it for the third time around!  This year though, I have a plan.  I have a secret weapon that I am about to share with you!  My secret science project weapon is Netflix!  HAHAHAHA!!!  Yep, I bet you didn’t know that you could use Netflix for ideas when it comes to your science fair projects, but you can!  On Netflix you can spark your childs {or your} imagination with a variety of science and chemistry related shows.  You, I mean, your child, can learn how things are made, what makes things go, how things actually work and there are even a couple documentaries that are quiet interesting to watch!  Here is a short list from Netflix that I would love to share that are sure to inspire your young scientist!  Our favorite is the Discovery Channels, How Stuff Works and Mythbusters!!

    7. Mythbusters

    Kids are naturally inquisitive, at least mine are.  So getting them excited about how things are related to science was a piece of cake!  Ever since they were younger they would watch shows like Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius and The Magic School Bus, which are awesome shows that introduce your little ones to the magic of science and how fun it could really be, along with a few others like Peep And The Big Wide World, Animal Mechanicals, and Wild Kratts, which are also available on Netflix!

    Even though we didn’t have to do any science fair project for school this year, we decided to do a couple fun experiments of our own.  My daughter loves experimenting with things {she even showed me how to light a crayon as a candle, that she researched herself using YouTube!}.  Today we turned a liquid into a gel and created our own homemade finger paint and made something that turns from a solid to a liquid using just water and cornstarch.  We’ll start with our DIY Homemade Finger Paint that is non-toxic and fun!

    Ingredients
    1. 2 cups of water
    2. 3 TBSP sugar
    3. 1/2 cup of cornstarch
    4. 1/2 tsp salt
    5. food coloring
    Instructions
    1. Mix all the ingredients into a small saucepan until it is thickened (it will look like a gel). When you have reached that consistency, let it cool. You want it cool enough to touch, so little fingers don't get burned. We placed the mixture into four small mason jars but you could probably make 4 more colors if you wanted and I'd probably use baby food jars instead. Once you have them in their jars, just add food coloring until you've reached your desired colors.

    Then we made something using cornstarch and water.  We used 1 cup of water to 2 cups of cornstarch and it made this substance that when you touch it in the bowl, it’s hard but when you put it in your hand it’s turns to a liquid.  She even put in food coloring, which now I advise not doing as it will turn your hands different colors!!!  Now I look like I have bruises all over my left hand! :O

    Science Experiment Using Cornstarch

    I hate to admit it, but I actually had fun experimenting with cornstarch.  I have a feeling there will be many many kid-friendly experiments ahead of me, but that’s ok. It gave myself and my daughter a chance to bond, have fun, learn about solids and liquids and the best part of all, we go to play with it and laugh!

    Have you been inspired to get out there with your little ones and experiment away?  Have you figured out what your child will be creating for his or her science fair project?  Hopefully these ideas have sparked your interest!  If not, there are 13 more ways from Common Sense Media that will motivate your child this science fair season!  Let us know what has been a favorite science experiment that you and your littles have done together in the comments below!!

    1. Hudson (and my husband) love watching how stuff works and mythbusters!! We have tried the cornstarch experiment before, but it was when we were trying to make homemade sidewalk chalk… and I screwed up the recipe (shocker)
