    Fancy Holidays…forget about it!

Long gone are the days of fancy holidays here at this house. I am lucky most holidays if I can get one decoration up let alone two Christmas tree and holiday lights. Christmas has always been my favorite holiday too. When I was first married, I would decorate with stuffed snowmen, wooden wall hangings, holiday plates and cups, fancy table linens, and lights and garland everywhere. I would wear holiday clothing (yeah, it was the early 90’s…and it was a bad look, I agree) oh and bell jewelry. I still love Christmas and seeing all the pretty lights glistening, but I realize that it lacks the luster it once had, or appeared to have.

I don’t know if it’s just me or if all moms run into this but for me, decorating for the holidays when I had one child was fun and exciting. Watching her get all excited about the tree and all the lights were exciting, to say the least. After adding the second child, there weren’t as many decorations, but the feeling of watching my son checking out the decorations and lights was equally exciting. By the third child, who has the energy to decorate anymore? The decorations became lessened. The tree and minimal decorations were put up and were on display and seeing her check out the same tree and lights for the first time were again, equally exciting. However, now that they are older, as long as I have a tree up and lights outside, they are happy. Seeing that they didn’t really care about having a home decorated from top to bottom in garland, I have “let go” of a lot of my holiday pieces. It is like having a weight lifted from my shoulders. Now, I have my Hallmark musical snowmen {I get those every year}, a few little pieces, small family room tree decorated with simple blue & silver ball ornaments {no garland, ribbons, beads…just ornaments and white lights} and a living room larger tree filled with childhood ornaments and colored lights is all we need. I threw away all my lighted reindeer this year…all my broken spiral lighted trees, and all I have outside is a few strands of lights tossed on a few bushes.

It made me realize that decorations do not make the holiday special, being with family and loved ones is what makes the holiday season so important. {Thank you Charlie Brown} Lighten the load…give yourself a break and minimize your holiday stress by not trying to play Tim “The Toolman” Taylor this year! Keep it sweet and simple and you will still see those happy little smiles on Christmas morning and each day leading up to it!
