How To Keep Your Lettuce Really Fresh All Week

Yes, the struggle is real!  How do you keep your lettuce really fresh all week?  When you get tired of throwing away limp and wilting lettuce you’ll try just about anything, right?  That’s exactly what I did.  I love lettuce and having a salad, but honestly, I hate preparing it.  I thought if I washed it, cut it and put it in a Ziploc bag, all would be good.  But no, I soon found out that by storing it in a bag only bought me a couple days.  Then I tried putting it in a storage bag, getting all the air out and then putting it in a container would help.  And, it did.  But that only lasted a few days, four tops.  However, I had one more thing to try before I just gave up my quest for the perfect way to store lettuce.

While I was out shopping, I walked through the kitchen utensil aisle, because I like to try and figure out what half that stuff is used for and came across the mason jars.  I looked at the biggest one and had a thought.  What if I put my lettuce in this big mason jar?  Will my lettuce stay fresh?  Will it keep longer?  I figured, why not give it a try.  What do I have to lose?  I couldn’t wait to get home and test out my theory!

I got out my Cuisinart salad spinner and started to cut my lettuce.  Who knew how awesome having a salad spinner was?  It really does make the process of preparing a salad so much easier.  I cut and washed up 3 bunches of Romaine lettuce.

Once I had it all cut and washed, I placed as much as I could into the large 32 ounce mason jar.  You can fit just about all three Romaine bunches into the mason jar.  I used the remaining lettuce for my lunch.  My neighbor gave me some homemade chicken strips and I thought it would be perfect to add to my salad.  Top it with some shredded cheddar, bacon pieces and ranch dressing and you have a great lunch!

By keeping lettuce in my mason jar, I noticed that it really does stay fresher longer and it was as crispy as the first day I bought it.  The lettuce that I had in the mason jar lasted approximately 1.5 weeks (if not 2).  It worked so awesomely that I shared this tid bit of information with my mom who is a HUGE salad eater.  The woman can eat lettuce by the bunches! After testing it out for herself, she couldn’t believe how well the mason jar worked.

If you give this a try, be sure to let me know what you think!
