Living Room, Dining Room and Foyer Makeover – Part One

0

After being in one home for 16 years you’re bound to find things that need a little sprucing up or in need of some repairs. This is true for my home at least.  We moved into our newly built home shortly after my son turned one.  To put things into perspective, he was just turning 17 when we decided (or I should say, I decided) to freshen up my foyer, living room and dining room.  It wasn’t really a huge project in the grand scheme of things, but it very easily could have been.  I had to get creative and give my living room, dining room, and foyer a makeover, on a budget!

I had a GOAL!

We were hosting an 8th-grade graduation party and my goal was to have my home fixed up prior to the event.  A list needed to be made and I hate making lists! The first thing on my list was to shop for paint. I had some ugly painted walls, that’s for sure. It was burgundy, blue-ish gray, and two clay (like a golden terracotta planter) colors. Hideous, it was just hideous! I wanted something that was in the gray family because that’s what the rest of the lower level was in.  Depending on how the natural light hits it, it gives the illusion that it is 4 different colors when there’s only two.  I picked out Sultry Gray by Behr.

There was only one thing I knew for sure, well two really.

1. I can’t replace the flooring due to timing, and

2. I wasn’t going to do the painting.

We have really high vaulted ceilings and while I do enjoy painting, there was no way I was going to do anything to that ceiling.  Seeing that my husband is a drywall finisher by trade, he was able to fix all the walls while I scouted some painters.  From the countless times the hoverboard hit the corners of the wall or my son threw his rubber baseball up against the wall, to the endless amount of dings, dents, and holes put in the wall, he managed to fix every, last speck of the flawed walls.

It’s time to SHOP!

Once the walls were all prepped and the painters were secured, it was time for me to…SHOP!  I had all the basics, dining room set, couch, chairs, tables, tv, piano, you name it, I had all the necessary furniture.  However, a few things needed to be refinished.

I found this sofa table at a garage sale for $10 and thought it would look amazing at the top of my stairs in the hallway.  All it needed was a little sanding and some new paint.  Chalk paint, here I come!  I finally get to chalk paint, you guys!  It was such a simple process that I decided to do it with my coffee table and two end tables too!  Check out this handy work!

Once I was finished with my painting projects, my friend and I headed to a total of 4 stores and found everything I needed to make my home look like the spa room I dreamed of.  Hitting up Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Kirkland’s, and HomeGoods, I was amazed at the deals I was finding!  Look at all these fabulous goodies!

Let’s Get a New Entry Door!

Just as my painters were leaving (they were awesome to work with BTW), my husband’s friend came over to get my front door replaced and installed.  Yep, I needed a whole new door. We went to Home Depot but the regular door guy wasn’t there so when it came time to actually order it (it had to be a special, custom order due to the sidelight), we went to a different location and boy am I glad we went there!  The woman that helped us did a little clicking and somehow saved us over $400 on the SAME exact door! *MINDBLOWN* So, with that extra money we saved, we also purchased a new storm door.  I’m not going to lie, I was a bit nervous when I had no door! What if the new door didn’t fit right? Eeeks!

BUT, it did!  It fit like a glove and it was like a beautiful, leather glove! I had a door that actually stayed closed when you closed it.  Now, I didn’t have to worry about leaving my home and finding that the wind blew it open! That has actually happened.  I was so grateful that I had a door.  I love my door. I couldn’t wait to hang a wreath on it despite my husband’s protest.

Let’s recap:

  • Walls repaired
  • Painted picked
  • Foyer door ordered
  • Painters painted
  • I shopped
  • New front door delivered and installed
  • Furniture was chalk-painted

Stay Tuned!

In my next post, you’ll be able to see how everything finally made it’s way back together.  It was a beautiful transformation.  It’s now, easily one of my favorite rooms in the house.  All it needs now is new flooring.  Then I will be ready to tackle my master bathroom!
