Road Trip to Florida – Part 1

Last month we went and took a nice road trip to Florida. We were looking for things to do that were not “Disney” related. It isn’t that we don’t like Disney, we actually love it, but we’ve been there many times but I thought the kids would like to see some other areas of Florida. You can read about my lovely road trip driving experience here. Let’s just say, I’m glad to be home.  Our first day driving, my car was hit by flying debris and I just wanted to stop over night to sleep.  I wanted out of the car.  Finally after hours of driving, my husband agreed to stop for the evening.  We stopped just outside of Atlanta for a few hours of sleep.  Before we hit the road again we had to have breakfast at Denny’s.  My husband is really finicky about having breakfast and not just a drive thru one, he wanted to sit down and enjoy his big meal.  The kids were all goofy at that point.  I think they just wanted to get to the house we rented.

After spending more time on the road, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel.  I packed so many things for the kids to do in the car and they really needed NOTHING!!!  They were so involved on their phones that I honestly don’t even know if they knew we drove anywhere.  It was easy in the sense that I didn’t have to hear “are we there yet” 8,000 times.  I had made all these plans once we got there but honestly, when we did, I just wanted to sleep.

Once we arrived, we settled into our home away from home. It was nice to walk in and see a nice note with a couple special bottles for the adults and the kids. They also provided some pool toys for the kids to play with.  We ran to the store, grabbed some quick food to cook and headed back to the house for the rest of the day/night.  We were actually in Orlando so that my son could play with his “then” travel baseball “team”.  I use that term loosely because what followed after our trip was an utter and complete joke, but I’m sure I’ll share that story at some point.  Until then, let me focus on the GOOD times we had while we were on vacation.

We headed to the Wide World of Sports at Disney and had a lot of fun.  My son enjoyed the experience and that is all I could ask for.  He was happy to be there and to be a part of it at that moment.  It was hot and expensive, but he enjoyed it and is now left with fun memories.

One of the nights they had an opening ceremony and that was a lot of fun.  The kids were introduced and walked on the big field to their seats.  Mickey made an appearance and they had some fun games and activities prior to the ceremony.  Gianna was overcome with excitement when it came to looking for lizards.  I think she was more excited to find them than anything else.  Every free moment she had, she was looking for those lizards and wanted to take one home…uhm, no.  We headed to Downtown Disney, which we had been to many times.  We had to get our usual, a Strawberry smoothie {that was $8 a glass I think….} from the little stand by the stage.  We go there each and every time we visit Downtown Disney.  It’s our tradition!  I was sad that they were doing so much construction all around there because it did make it more difficult to navigate with driving, parking and walking.  We stopped in the Lego store….cause who doesn’t?  I found Buzz Lightyear and had to have my picture taken with him because it was the first movie I took Alyssa to when she was two years old!  Buzz and I go way back!

So far the trip is shaping up to be a very fun and family-friendly experience.  Tomorrow I’ll share Part 2 which will be our trip to the beach and Kennedy Space Center!!

Have you ever been to the Wide World of Sports at Disney?  We didn’t win it all but my son was a real winner and I couldn’t have been more proud of him for pushing personal feelings aside, and doing his best while holding his head up high.  I am one proud mama!<3
