    Weekly Weigh In {week 1}

    I have struggled with my weight for the last 9 years.  Yes, it has been that long that I have let myself go.  *sad face* But, this year I decided to make one little change.  I wasn’t going to do this unless I knew I would succeed at it.  Yeah, I probably posted in the past my new found love for dieting, but that never lasted longer than a week or two.  I even tried Weight Watchers and while I believe it could really work, I just couldn’t afford the expense any longer {especially when my husband is laid off -construction isn’t what it used to be}.  So, what’s a girl to do?  I realized early on that tracking or writing in a food journal was the only way to hold myself accountable for what goes into my mouth.  The thing is, I hate making lists {never was good at it}, and I am not one for journaling.  I have had good intentions, but after about 3 months of keeping a daily “life” journal, I got bored and stopped doing it.  Now I look at those journals and not much as changed.

    MyFitnessPalApp

    I read somewhere about the new My Fitness Pal app and I thought, ehhh, what the heck, I’ll download it and see what it’s all about.  This was of course, after I got off the scale of death.  I have probably downloaded every diet, health, fitness app that has been created for the hopes that opening one would click and be the key to my successful journey.  While I was searching for the My Fitness Pal app, I came across the Striiv app and thought ehh, what the heck, I’ll download this one too.  And, boy oh boy, am I glad I did.  They are both free apps too which always makes me happier.

    Let’s see, I downloaded My Fitness Pal first and signed up and looked around.  It’s really nice.  I like the colorful plates of food upon starting the app, lol.  Once you are logged in, you have your navigation area that shows you your Diary, Nutrition, Progress, Friends, Messages, Apps & Devices, Reminders and Settings.  I set everything up, added that dreaded weight I was less than pleased with earlier, set my exercise goals and I was pretty much good to go.  When you go to your diary, you can add, change, delete foods that you’ve eaten that day and it’s broken down by categories, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.   {You can see an example of my first day here.} I added a new category for my vitamins because I figured if I’m tracking, I need to start taking daily vitamins and my garlic pills too!  Their food database is huge!  To this date I have not had to enter my own food!  Everything was right there at my finger tips.  I love it because if you go to Nutrition, you will see a pie graph or bar graph of your carbs, fat, proteins consumed and how it’s broken down!  You view daily or weekly!  When you click on the progress tab, you can view weight progress!  I absolutely love that it gets broken down to percentages too!  It’s one thing to see the weight but then to see the percentage change..that’s awesome!  It also shows you your streak…how many days you’ve logged in and tracked.  I’m up to 9 straight days! 🙂  {feel free to add me as a friend if you download the app or are already using it…the more motivation and support, the better, right?}

    But as if that wasn’t all.  No, then I found Striiv and what I love about this app is that is sync’s with My Fitness Pal and when you walk, climb stairs it automatically calculates it into calories and it is added to your My Fitness Pal total {which allows me to have a credit…yeah, I have a calorie credit that carries over until you have debited all your calories earned…it’s cool}…but then… if that doesn’t get you, you can play a game to challenge yourself daily and earn coins and gems and build your little fairy land…it’s so fun.  Like right now, as I am typing this, I have only taken 947 steps today and it’s challenging me to reach 987 in 5 minutes and if I accept and meet that goal, I receive 900 {lightening bolts} and if I don’t meet that goal, it will cost me 0.  As the challenges get bigger, the more is at stake.  You can also play with friends …you just have to check it out.  It’s hard to explain, but just know, if you hate exercising, but love playing games, this one may be for you.  Last night I marched in place for about 30 minutes just to get more coins and stuff so I can buy a few plants and go to the next level! lol

    Ok, but do these two apps really help?  YES!  I found that I was more excited to jot my food intake in the My Fitness Pal app and watch my progress.  It has helped me to not forget to take my vitamins and garlic pill {I take that to hopefully lower my {slightly} high cholesterol}.  It has helped me to keep track of my water intake and of course, it’s helped to motivate me to get off the couch, even if it’s just to march in place for 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there.  I am excited to see where my journey will lead.  Right now, yes, it’s still fresh and new and I am positive that once I get past the initial uncomfortableness of exercising, that too will take over and I’ll love it, well, maybe not “love” it, but it will be more enjoyable.

    Final results, I have found two awesome apps…and I have lost 2.2 pounds in 7 days.  My journey has just begun!  How about you?  What has worked {or is currently working} in your own personal weight loss journey?  I’d love to hear from you.
