There are many options as to how you can play this game. If you’re a competitive soul, you can either play up to 4 different friends or family members or play solo against bots directly on your switch by selecting the “Quick Match” option on the game’s clean main menu.
If you know someone who owns a Nintendo Switch, competition can be held in your own “Local Play Room”. This directly connects your switch to your foes.
If you’re desperate for competition, yet have nobody around to play with, you’re in luck. There is an option to play against random people in either ranked matches or free matches (unranked).
For those who want to brag anyone and everyone about their personal best scores, a leaderboard is included to see how you rank amongst your friends, and how you compare to the rest of the globe. The final way to play is through a unique story mode that sends you and some of the game’s classic characters back to 1964.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 is jam-packed with various events to play with, or against others. To be more specific, there are 24 “Tokyo 2020” game modes, which have graphics we’d expect from the switch. The character models are clear, the environments are beautiful, and the game runs as smooth as butter. Some of my personal favorites I was able to play were: Gymnastics, Javelin Throw, and even Boxing. However, that’s not all this game has to offer.
A Blast from the Past!
What is unique this year, is that you’re able to go back in time to 1964 and experience the 8-bit graphics we know and love from the classic Mario Brothers and Sonic the Hedgehog games. To immerse yourself, even more, the game offers an “Analog TV” mode to enhance your throwback videogame aesthetic. There are 10 additional game modes that can be played in the 8-bit style.
The “Tokyo 2020” game modes take full advantage of the Nintendo Switches’ advanced motion controls. All 2020 game modes have the option to be played with both Joy-Cons or only one if you need to share with a friend or family member. If you do not want to look like you’re running a 100-meter dash in public, you can also play with the buttons directly on the Joy-Cons. I had an immense amount of fun testing my reaction time and accuracy playing Shooting and going head-to-head with my friends in Judo. A wide range of emotions was shown from anger to laughter as we are extremely competitive. Nonetheless, we had a blast.
I was a little frustrated at the beginning. I found some of the event’s directions to be a little unclear. However, it gets easier every time you participate in that specific event. These games might be confusing, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find this game extremely enjoyable.
The Nintendo Switch’s adaptation of Mario and Sonic Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 was fun and exciting for both experienced gamers and those who are new to gaming. I strongly recommend this game for get-togethers or family events. It will provoke friendly competition and endless amounts of fun.
